Oh my god.
2007 Squirrel Saga takes a morbid twist. The Critter Guy said that it appears a squirrel accidently fell down the shaft, not in the chimney, not in the surrounding "box", but instead, between the chimney and another pipe. For Muy, Muy Money (as in several thousand bucks or so), we could rip off the outside of our chimney casing and tear apart all that tubing to free the little fucker (the squirrel, not the Critter Guy). Or, we could let the little fucker die, light some fires and hope for the best.
See ya later - I'm off to buy marshmallows and hot dogs. Yeehaw.

awwwwwww... can't they lower a rope of some sort and let it crawl out?????
It's not that easy. Also, it is probably a juvenile and they are not smart/mature enough to figure it out. Besides, the squirrel has been in there since yesterday and is probably too weakened to get out now anyway. The Critter Guy could not see the squirrel at all, so it may be wedged in somewhere.
His recommendation was the "let it die" route, rather than the muy expensive one which would really result in the excavation of a carcass anyway by the time they get here to fix it. The guy felt really bad about it.
I almost wish our stupid cedar shake roof would rot off so that I could replace it with composite or something less attractive to these damned squirrels.
As someone who spent her childhood in a house that always had some critter or other dying inside the walls, I say go with option A and just light candles and burn incense until the smell goes away. It's bad, but not that bad.
Wow. That just sucks. Like, really sucks. I am so sorry - but the stinkiness DOES eventually go away...
Okay, I'm trying this comment a second time.
a) I'm agog squirrels can be so expensive. I didn't realised they were so mentally deficient.
b) I need to write to you, very obviously, for some advice and venting. I know you like to pretend you're so "old" ;), even though you're NOT (and look younger, more importantly) but you're a little bit further along in a similar career and similar issues negotiating crap with guys so I'm welcoming your POV on a lot of stuff.
And also, I must sulk in your gmail account.
(am feeling considerably less angry right now but still in need of sorting out my feelings and I'd like to ask an objective party how what I have to say is going to sound)
Sounds like the cats are not doing their job!
They are supposed to keep squirrels out of their territory, thus preventing situations like this.
Our AC stuff is under our house, a squirrel ate a hole into the ductwork...got in there & died.
Naturally, we discovered it only from the smell....while we had out of town guests staying at our house.
Yes, squirrel damage can be VERY expensive!
...those little sh*ts!
