When does Grey's Anatomy get GOOD?

And here I am, yet again ignoring my friends with heartbeats in favor of those with high-speed Internet connections. You lucky bastards......

Okay, so when does Grey's Anatomy get good? I've watched the first season and at this point, could go either way with continuing onto Season 2. I think McDreamy is an asshole for leading Meredith on about waiting to get to know him when he had a fucking WIFE all along. He should be called McMeany - hello! And clearly, Christina is not going to keep the baby. Or is she? But seriously, does the show get Red Hot in the 2nd season or something? I mean, it's not a bad show so far, but I don't understand all the hype. It's a soap opera about doctors. A GOOD soap opera, but I am still not sure I want to commit to another season on DVD, then scramble to fit in Season 3 before Season 4 hits this fall. Is it worth it? Majority vote wins - Blockbuster is counting on you.

I took Arun for a haircut today and Oh, Dear God Above it was a nightmare. You may have noticed that I haven't really done many Haircut Posts despite the fact that we are well past 8 of 'em now and I've lost count at this point. Frankly, they just haven't been very interesting, save for the very first one when Arun was a scant 3 months old. Most haircuts go okay with him getting antsy towards the end. This one? He started crying as soon as we SAT IN THE CHAIR. And the Hair? Was FLYING. It was all over me, my face, my mouth, my eyes. It was all over Arun, his face, his mouth, his eyes. The barber and I were just so desperate to get the haircut over ALREADY that I told the guy to just go gangbusters. And he did.

Oh, and the cleaning of the carpets went well - I was surprised but amused by how much fun Arun had with the guys - it was hard to keep him from following them around, though. Also, I am EXHAUSTED from moving all the stuff around and the house is in a complete disarray still because I can't move everything back yet. And I am hosting Canasta on Saturday AND my sister is spending the night which means I most certainly have to get the guest bedroom in order as well. But I'm not stressed. We're talking cucumbers, folks. I'm a SAHM, what the hell else do I have to do all day but sit around and Stay?

Carpet Advice: The Carpet Guy (literally, that is the company I have been using for years and they are AWESOME) said that nylon is the best carpet for wear and stain resistance. We have polyester which is why I've struggled with staining, even though I use Spot Shot. In my last house, I spilled red wine and even paint, yet was always able to get the stains out. This house has been a struggle, but I feel better now knowing why. The Guy said that even the lowest grade nylon is better than the highest grade polyester. He also pointed out that the carpet dealer will tell you otherwise, for obvious reasons.

Bonus Carpet Advice: Since I'm on a roll..... A friend of mine whose ex-husband was a carpet layer has said that you should always buy good padding and then insist on SEEING it when they come to your house to lay the carpet. Apparently, it's one of the oldest tricks in the book to switch out good padding for cheap padding. I can also report that good padding is worth it. The previous owners had obviously gotten good padding and now, my tender piggies are pretty snobbish about the whole thing.

Some Rambledly Randomness: I did some research on the dangers of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)- I've mentioned it here before about how I try to avoid it and that basically, HFCS is just CRAP for you. In short, HFCS definitely affects your metabolism and how you process sugars. It can also lead to copper deficiencies. Anyway, once a commenter said that it was all over-hyped. I've always meant to address that comment, but Laziness overtook all my Good Intentions. Here you go......

The Weston A. Price foundation has a great article here.. An article from the Nutrition Reporter is here. Both of the these sites are great resources for other topics on nutrition as well. I also found an interesting article from the San Francisco Gate is here. Finally, it seems there has been a great conspiracy from the Corn Growers of America to drown us all in a big sugary vat of, you guessed it, high fructose corn syrup. Gasp!

I blame Iowa.

I've been making a point of avoiding HFCS in packaged foods and MAN is it hard to find bread without it! If I thought there was any chance I could bake my own bread and get it to stay fresh long enough for us to eat it all, I'd just do that.

BTW, Wild Oats has some really good organic ketchup without HFCS or sugar. It turns a little dark once it's been opened, but it still tastes fine.

Thanks for the tip on the carpet - we will be purchasing new carpet for our basement in the next couple of months so it couldn't be more timely - also need to get my carpets cleaned before baby comes so I may give The Carpet Guy a jingle!

Thanks for such great information!!!

Grey's is totally worth it in season 2. I don't know how much you want to spoil, but it's good.

And Christina looses the baby in one of the next episodes. It was eptopic. And Burke gets in the bed and holds her, and it is one of the most heart warming scenes on TV. Ever.

And there's a prom, and George and Meredith have a disastrous, "This can't really be happening! I can't look! oh, gross!!", love scene and it takes them a while to get over it. And Izzy falls in love with a patient.

This is one of my biggest beefs with commercial condiments and marinades, which is why I developed that miso-soy thing myself. It's EVERYWHERE. The only one I'm still sort of keeping to, that I know has it, is Maggi Chili-Garlic sauce. I know it's awful but I use it very rarely but CANNOT give it up as a samosa condiment.

It goes under the heading of government conspiracy for me. If it weren't for the huge subsidies corn farmers get, and the high import taxes on sugar cane, the market would have us using actual sugar and not pretend sugar.

Good carpet tips. I knew none of that.

That's so funny that the carpet guy is reeally called The Carpet Guy. I speak in generic terms like that with any "guy" who is providing a service--car guy, washer guy, hot water heater guy, etc. And interesting to know about the carpets, especially the polyester vs. nylon! Wish I had known earlier as we have replaced all of our carpeting already. I'll log that in the old brain for the future. OMG, haircut woes!! WOW! And I had to check back at the little 3 month old baby getting his first haircut!! So adorable.

Jane (and other interested eaters) -
Try Pepperidge Farms Whole Grains bread. No HFCS, no sugar. And somehow it keeps well...as long as other whole grain breads. I especially like the 15 Grain variety...they more grains the better!

For me, Grey's Anatomy is one of those shows that I am addicted to despite my indifference towards it. I think it's a little silly, and sometimes annoying, but I still watch it. I dunno, does that help at all??

So i was watching the First season each week on lifetime. We're on episode three now.. so apparently watching more would be pointless now that you revealed almost everything?! Ha. No, I'll still watch it.. although I agree with you; it's good, but it doesn't blow me away. Maybe I'll feel about GA the same way I feel about Ugly betty-- at first i thought it was OK, but now I think it's crazy awesome.

Couple of things:
Try Shear Madness for the Haircuts, over in Overland Park. Its a lttle more expensive than the Barber (like $3-5) but worth it, they entertain them by putting them in front of a movie, its pretty cool how they distract them and also the girls there are more used to dealing with upset kids than the barber. My boys did better there until they were old enough to chill out at the Barber.
Also, wouldn't it be nice if the corn growers could focus more on corn-based gasoline to run clean cars than HFCS? They could still make plenty of money and we would all feel a little better.

I vote YES on the Grey's Anatomy. You will probably be continually annoyed by Meredith, but it is a good show. Warning though - they start having a lot of baby stories, and watching them while I was pregnant sure made me cry even more than usual!

I'll bet we have polyester carpeting in the basement (the only part of our house w. carpeting and the only part of the house where the cat ever pukes up a hairball). Anyway, that could well explain why it's so difficult to really erase those stains.

You've reminded me that it's time to get the carpet cleaning guys in.

Goofy Girl - I have been buying the Pepperidge Farm bread. I find it a little...damp. It needs to be double toasted to be acceptable for breakfast, but that's a minor complaint.

CARPET PADDING - As an owner of a new home and a notorious researcher, I can attest that if you replace the carpet padding, also get the rubber padding, not that foam stuff...it's not really that much more expensive per sq foot and the advantages are that it won't compress, won't let spills soak through to your subfloors, resists mold, offers more cushion, etc.

The HFCS conspiracy all starteds when we banned sugar imports from cuba. This makes sugar very expensive for companies in the US becuase they have to ship it in from very far more expensive places. SOOOOO America switched to HFCS in all of its food production. NOW our corn farmers and sugar beet farmers are so dependent on the production of it, we can't afford take the embargo off of Cuba because our farmers would go under. THis is why AMerica is addicted to carbs and obese. Also this is why people from other countries think our food is way to sweet. Every other country uses real suger! Conspiracy theory....I think not lol
