How can you hear yourself think?

Cerebral Venus Bookclub
Reminder: On Monday, June 18th, we will be discussing Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. I am loving this book, although I am struggling with some of the in-depth discussion that covers novels I have never read. However, I can't wait for the Austen section!

The Veg-O-Matic
Before I had kids, I had this total stereotype that kids hate veggies. However, my kid LOVES veggies - coleslaw, salads, roasted cauliflower and various Indian curries such as green beans, spinach, cabbage, beets. Is this normal?

Speaking of the Gits
Last week, I let Arun play with my Wallace and Gromit dolls, er... collectibles. I've also let him play with my treasured Mr. Bean car. See, I can do this mothering gig!

Cinnamon Roll Ho
X went to Whole Foods today for some cheese and did not bring me back a cinnamon roll. For those in the back, I repeat, he did NOT bring me back a cinnamon roll. What the fuck? Does the man not listen to my incessant whining about how badly I have been craving cinnamon rolls with this kid??? He pulls this sort of shit right before FATHER'S DAY? Has the world gone mad?

I'm right there with you on the veggie thing. Beans and veggies, he'll throw a brownie on the floor and go after spinach and kidney beans.

And don't mess with this boy's salad, I better have plenty of spinach on there or there is going to be hell to pay.

Oh, and onion! You can't slice an onion around this place without him begging...I could go on and on.

So your question of, "Is this normal?" No friggin' clue, it does seem awfully strange. I thought I'd be fighting the macaroni and cheese and chicken fingers.

Ebaby LOVES her vegatables. She eats tomatos like apples and thinks cole slaw is a dessert.

I don't know if it's normal. I'm just damn glad I don't have to fight her over it!

I've also got a couple of veggie eaters. Salads, green beans, corn, carrots, spinach...it's all good here;>

All,
Cool! My kid is just normal. Where does the stereotype come in, I wonder?

Hermit,
My kid loves his veggies, but knows better to throw brownies around. Your kid's cuh-razee. :-)

Bethany,
I forgot tomatoes! He begs for the samples at the grocery store. I remember as a kid loving coleslaw because it was sweet. Figures.

Woo-woo,
Corn? Hmmm, I just realized we don't eat corn. I wonder why?

Neither my brother nor I put up any fuss when it came to veggies. (Except mushrooms and turnips... blech! But at least my mom agrees with us on those so we never had them in the house.) In fact, by the time we were in middle and high school, our entire freezer was stocked full of those vegetable dishes you just pop in the microwave. They were our afterschool snack... and she still stocks up on them whenever we go home. :-) None of her friends could believe that we'd eat vegetables for an afterschool snack. But I sure wouldn't turn down brownies or cookies or chips if they were around... they just weren't in the house much, and we didn't whine and beg my mom for them. We are all big suckers for ice cream though.

X is obviously looking for a fight. Maybe would you could "accidentally" forget Father's Day.

My kids too are veggie eaters, the waitress at pizza shop once asked Audrey if she was sure she wanted green peppers and tomatoes on her pizza and Audrey looked at her and rolled her eyes (ala pre-teen) and said yes, that is my favorite pizza. But they also totally love their sweets, especially ice cream and brownies.

I picked up "Reading Lolita in Tehran" today, so I should easily have it finished by Monday. I'm looking forward to participating this time!

Heh. Don't count your veggie eaters before they grow. Both mine loved all veggies until about the age of 2-3. Then the only way I could get them in was by stealth or ranch dressing. Now, they are sloooooowly going back to them. Colin's worse than Sara, but both did this. Little wretches.

I think it's normal. Otherwise generations of japanese, chinese, indian, middle eastern etc. etc. kids wouldn't grow up eating the foods they do.

My parents claim our first palate is based on what comes through in the breastmilk and just what is fed to a kid at home. Over the years I refined my palate to include cuisines I had absolutely no exposure to (Japanese, sushi being the best example...since desis cook everything to "very well done") but I simply can't eat stuff like French without feeling cheated.

I've read on some Indian food blogs that their kids bitch and moan about blander WPF stuff they make for a change-mainly because their first palate is geared to certain veggies and copious amounts of garlic, ginger, chilies and coconut.

I think that's so cute!!

I have to say this:

My family and I saw a three year old (not Japanese, just regular old American) eating sushi in Little Tokyo the other day!!!! We were so impressed. It was maki rolls and a few of the easier nigiri stuff (salmon) but we were like, wow!

I guess it makes sense, though, right? They like food they can looks at and pick up with their hands and stuff.

It was still awesome, though.

Allie is a HUGE veggies fan! Hopefully it will stay that way, cause whenever I say that someone with an older child, they say to me. How old is she? Under 2? HAHA Just wait.

=\ I guess we'll see.

I think some kids are just wired that way, I always ate my vegetables as a kid, no matter what age.

Monkey - the little sushi eater sounds so adorable! I love little kids doing such activities, so damn cute!

My guy is crazy, for not eating brownies (edge lover here, myself) but he makes up for it in spicy Indian snack mix and potato chips, he can't move fast enough towards either one of those bags.

Goofy Junior LOVED veggies until he turned 3. Now everything is "Ew!" unless it's pizza or fruit.

Whole Foods cinnamon rolls - Mmmmmmm.

We have the stereotypical non veggie eater. It's pretty much just carrots and corn that will pass that 3 year old mouth -- anything green is automatically suspicious. He at least has good taste in meat -- bring on the steak, pork chops and salmon for our boy. Never thought I'd have to buy the good stuff for my preschooler.
