Wrapping Up More Than Presents

This is not the "I've Been Too Busy To Post" post.  Promise.

I thought, perhaps, I would rather write a "What I Have Been Up To Post" post.  October?  I hardly knew ye.  And November?  Did that really just happen?  Really?

Bridesmaid Bug notwithstanding, October was ridiculously FUN.  We did all the usual fall activities -- pumpkin patch, Boo-at-the-Zoo, pumpkin carvings, multiple dishings of pumpkin curry, a hayride and a bazillion trick-or-treating events, including the extravaganza that happens in our neighborhood every year.  Man, I love living in this suburban prairie, soul-sucking it may be.  Oh!  And we also celebrated Arun's birthday AND I ran slowly jogged the Waddell & Reed 5k (one of the best 5ks I've ever done -- GREAT course).

November?  Rose to the challenge of the gauntlet that October threw down.  I walked the Jeff Taylor 5k with Average Jane.  Later that day, I took the Team of Chaos to see Yo Gabba Gabba Live which was as awesome as Lance DJ fucking promised.  The next week, we went to the Shriner's circus which totally delivered.  The elephants provided Team Chaos' favorite act of the day by delivering huge, steamy piles of poo during their performance (Sidenote: I am still skeeved about the animal acts and allegations of animal cruelty.  Animal acts are NOT necessary and therefore, I remain conflicted about future circus attendances.)  I also attended a theatrical organ concert hosted by The Kansas City Theatre Pipe Organ group.  On the way home from that concert, I am pretty certain I was about to be carjacked, but I am not comfortable writing about it yet.  This is the 2nd time I have had a suspicious event like that happen in Kansas City in the past few years.  However, considering how often I go to Kansas City, I suppose those are still pretty damned good odds and I have no intentions of limiting our trips into the city Sigh.

December is shaping up to holding its own against October and November (I have a December Bucket List brewing)   Perhaps, it is the CPA in me, but overall, I simply adore 4th Quarter.  It's the most wonderful time of the year!

So!  As you can see, I haven't posted not for the lack of fodder, but simply because I did not feel like writing here.  I did, however, write in my journal for the month of November. Each evening, I took a minute to jot down the favorite part of my day.  It was a peaceful exercise, even on a few crummy days, to focus in on the little things in life that make It All Worthwhile.

Before I get back to my Words With Friends queue (ahem), I would like to give a shout-out to a locally owned business.  As many of you know, I crave handbags like a tweaker craves Walter White's Blue Sky.  For a few years now, I have been on the hunt for a red handbag, but I was looking for a particular shade of red -- a deep, deep hue. Awhile back, I began to think of going handmade instead of designer and  I was going to put a call out for local places to hunt (particularly, in Lawrence, KS).  Then, I noticed my sister Jill's handbag.  As I was inspecting the stitching and hardware, I spied the label.  It was none other than Dawn Shew of Growing a Pair, a fellow Kansas City blogger I have known for years.    She sells her bags in a shop in Lawrence, but she has an Etsy site, Seams Fine KS, for her bags.  I noticed that she did customs.  I decided to contact her since I was already impressed by the sturdy stitching, gorgeous fabric and quality hardware on my sister's purse.  A custom order would be perfect.  I contacted her about a custom order and we began talking fabric and exchanged some photos - I was really impressed with her advice for combining types of fabric in conjunction with colors -- all in relation to how the fabric will wear over the years

A week later and I now have the purse I have wanted for all these years:

The actual red is a just a tad darker and deeper than this shows.

Interior includes a zippered interior pocket and dual accessories pocket.  I love how the fabric is pretty thick and the bag has a "structure" to it -- it holds its shape and does not crumple.  Also, after all of my years buying designer bags, I am very particular about hardware.  The hardware on this really impressed me and the magnetic closure is really strong.
.
My Pretend Lawyer Made Me Write This: I paid full price for this bad boy and it was worth every penny. I did save on the shipping because I drove to Lawrence to pick up the bag personally, not because I am some Special Bloggy Type

There is such a huge movement toward buying local these days.  It's nice when it works out even better than buying from a department store!

Left on my local shopping list?  I need to troll the entire downtown of Lawrence KS, per my shopping tradition.  And most definitely, I will need a gander at Stuff and World's Window in Brookside.

Where is your favorite local Kansas City destination for holiday shopping?  I'm always on the hunt for new local goodies.

Long ago, I was in a Walgreens in Lawrence KS. It was raining and I was a drippy, sodden mess. I heard a voice behind me, "Are you Cagey from Rancid Raves?" It was Kenna - a reader. I don't get recognized very much in public and it never ceases to take me by surprise.

As it turns out, Kenna is a huge bag aficionado herself. Ah, a girl after my own heart. She sent me five snaps of her bags and I could not choose just one from this fun group of purses.

Thanks, Kenna!

Guest Post: Bag Lady

We have a guest poster this week - my good friend Brit! I am absolutely envious of her beautiful sewing and quilting skills, so of course, she posts something that she made with her own two hands. To taunt and mock me. Evil girl, she is.

Brit can usually be found posting at Running Stitch, when she is not trying to convince her three year old that he really should be wearing pants or her five year old that it is not, in fact, going to snow in June, and that maybe instead of making a snowman they could paint!

When Kelli started her bag entries I feigned interest, because you know, she's nice and I like her and I can force myself to look at her bag entries. I'm not really much of a bag person myself.

Except.

Except as I look around my house all I see is bags. Bags for grocery shopping, bags for library books, bags for the boys to take places full of distractions and clean clothes. Bags for biking, bags for the car, bags for lunch, bags for this sewing project, bags for that sewing project, bags for running shoes, bags for running clothes.

It's only been a few months, since I stopped carry a diaper bag. Of course now I carry a backpack full of extra clothes, because, wow! are little boys dirty. The backpack also contains bandaids, benadryl (my oldest is allergic to the world) tea (because you never know) and their medical information.

However, I have also gotten to the point where I'm going out sans boy bag often enough that I made a little bag for myself. I call it the 'Just Me" style I actually completed this over a year ago and I carry it everywhere. It is perfect for my wallet, cellphone, and change purse. And it fits right into any of the the bigger bags I perpetually
seem to be carrying.

Apparently, I am a bag lady after all.

As promised, welcome to this week's Scottish Edition of Handbag Thursday. Also known as "May I take a picture of your crotch, kind clansman?"

Last weekend while we were at the Scottish Highland Games, I realized I had a windfall for my Handbag Thursday. Like, DUDE. Men in kilts carrying handbags. Does it get any better? No. It does not.

Oh sure, you may say sporran, but I will still say handbag. Wicked cool.

Although, admittedly, there about a thousand things wrong and so not traditional with this guy's getup, I still liked his sporran.

I really wanted to get a closeup of the detail. But um. Yeah. No. No, thanks.

And since he was so kind to pose, how could I resist a full body shot? *cough*

As promised, I checked out purses today while at the DMV. My original line of thinking was that this would be easy pickings - after all, I usually languish in the crowded waiting area for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Every.Single.Year. Today? The waiting area was nearly empty save for a few men and a pair of little old ladies. Furthermore, I grabbed a ticket which had a number that was immediately announced. The one time I needed to hang out at the DMV? Denied. Totally.

But, of course.

Fortunately, I spied a gal standing near to me. I happened to finish my business first and then proceeded to pretend that I was taking snaps of Anjali, when in reality, I was in serious need of some telephoto lens action.

Anyway. I really liked the colors of this bag, which is why it grabbed me. I would love to have a bag like this for knitting projects!

Guilty Pleasures
I am in Branson, MO. With all these beautiful, luscious outlets.......utter bastions of temptation.

While I am loving my Sherpani backpack, I do not always need to tote a frockin' backpack into the grocery store. Or to Target. Or to lots of places. So. It seemed a smallish, evening-type bag was in order. One that I could conveniently tuck inside of the backpack.

But, of course.

So awhile back, while she was in Vegas, Monkey happened across my Only If I Ever Win The Lottery Dream Bag and took a snap of it for me. Yes, this is the infamous Birkin bag by Hermès. (Fun Washington Post article: the difference between a Kelly bag and a Birkin bag.) Folks, she saw this in person - a rarity right there. Of course, I will never actually own one of these bags and given the choice (ha! I crack myself up) this Kelli would prefer a Kelly bag.

Besides, I find it hard to believe that I could ever be in a financial position to buy one, much less be in an emotional position to own one. Dude. My grandma would have a heart attack if she ever found out that I paid over $200 for one of my favorite bags, much less what it would take to own a Birkin. Eh.

A girl can dream.

So, yeah. I missed Handbag Thursday last week. I just was not feeling it. And, eh. That is the beauty of being an Itty Bitty Blogger, folks are less likely to notice if you fail to show up or not.

This week's handbag comes from a Woman on the Street move I made a few weeks back at a local children's farm. I saw this bag and thought it was so interesting and fun. I stopped the gal, told her what I was up to and asked if I could feature it. She was so flattered and pleased by my request, that I will definitely be doing that move again!

This is a Lucky bag from Macy's.

Where is my snake?

These were 2nd set of words out of Anjali's mouth today (the first was "tell the monster to go away, mama". Bad dream, perhaps?) When Arun came into the room with his toy snake, she was adamant about finding hers. While it is cute, this competition of theirs, it is also tiring. We do not have two of everything around here, I am not trying to run a Noah's Ark Service for toys. Although, I am about ready to buy another goddamned Nerf gun because I am so tired of the fighting and whining. I will admit that I am a wee bit proud that my sweet baby girl knows how to load it, although she cannot quite cock it yet.

While I am mommyblogging today, let me tell a quickie about Arun. The other night, I asked him what did he want to do when he grows up - I expected an answer about taking care of animals, charming snakes, driving a racecar, uniting the world into a big, gooey group hug of peace and love. But no, his answer was, "Mama, I want to reach things." To be sure, he was probably thinking of that pair of scissors stored high, high away from him.

So, have you heard about that little site called Zappos? I suspect this is not a newsflash, but wow - that place rocks. Last night, I purchased a Sherpani backpack from there and immediately upon checkout realized I had missed the option to enter my gift certificate (an early birthday present from my mommy. Thanks Mom!) I sent an email and the problem was fixed within 10 minutes. Via email. Oh sure, their prices are not very competitive, but with free shipping and stellar customer service, Zappos will be getting my business again. They are currently batting 2 for 2. Not bad!

Speaking of backpacks, I am ditching the whole handbag thing for awhile. Last Saturday, we went to the Natural History Museum at KU in Lawrence (Total Sidenote: if you live in Kansas City and have kids who are as crazy about animals and dinosaurs as mine are, get theeself to Lawrence. It is totally worth it. We bought the membership, which is a bargain.) Anyhow, as I lifted the kids up and down and up and down to see exhibits that were inexplicably too high for children, I kept struggling with my handbag falling off of my shoulder. In general, I am finding that as we cruise parks, museums, children's farms, the zoo, etc. that the handbag is very inconvenient. I need something that will just hang on on my back as I lug around 60 lbs worth of Kid. I have been lusting after that backpack for well over a year now, so I am pretty excited. Although, the entire paradigm shift of not having a girly, cool handbag makes me crumble a little inside.

Finally. In conclusion about scribbling potentially controversial posts:
Folks, that sucked a lot of time out of my life that I will never back.

Thankfully, I did not get flooded with traffic, but it was weird traffic. As such, I felt I had to keep an eye on comments more closely than I normally would. I could have moderated comments, but we are out and about so much, I was simply not home enough to approve them, which would have stifled the conversation.

So, Overall, I am going to try and be more faithful and honest with my voice here but I was a little alarmed by how much time it took to monitor all of that. This is a creative outlet for me, not a job!

Okay, we are back to some fun, frothy nonsense. This blog is not about Heavy Lifting anyway, right?

This week's bag is from the lovely Monkey. When I began Handbag Thursday, she told me about a funky bag that had been given to her as a gift. I have been pressing her to send me the snap ever since and I was excited to finally see it. Apparently, this purse is made by a company called Ecoist and they were featured in In Style at some point because Carmen Diaz has one. Monkey's purse was made with gum wrappers from Mexico. A quick perusal of the site myself and I am already in love with the Coca-Cola version. However, the Barcode version brings back vivid memories of my mindless days as a checker in a discount grocery store in Lawrence aptly called Checkers. Yum.

My friend Mojavi sent this one in. What is difficult to convey in this photo is the sheer magnitude of this bag. This behemoth has a perfect "handbag" shape, yet it easily measures 24 inches wide and about 18 inches high - no kidding! I used to always tease Mojavi that this bag was worthy of Madame Maxim herself, the headmistress of generous proportions from Beauxbatons, the rival wizarding school to Hogwarts.

This is one of my handbags, but I use it as a knitting bag. Truthfully? It is not something that I would carry because I prefer leather. However, when my grandma offered it to me, I could not resist the red velveteen with the embroidery. It is just so pretty. And soft. So while it is not my style to carry as an actual handbag, I do enjoy using it to carry knitting projects.

This bag belongs to Deanna from Pair of Ducks Knitting. It is green. Can you not tell? Heh. Her mom used a secondhand sweater and made this purse for her. The straps and interior lining were also recycled. Awesome!

They* say one should blog for oneself first and foremost. And as the majority of us bloggers know, just because you blog and pour your heart and soul into your wee space, it most certainly does not mean the audience will come, much less read all those precious letters you just painstakingly pecked out. Heh. This means, that it is imperative to actually enjoy what you are doing on your blog. Astounding, I know.

As I mentioned last week, I am establishing a Handbag Thursday, my own little accessorized day o' the week. I see now why Jodifur is doing Shoe Friday - for no reason other than it is fun. I would like to give her a hearty thank you to her for encouraging me to plug forward with my Canal Street knockoff, Handbag Thursday. She was even gracious enough to provide this week's handbag.

This week was hectic and I got a lot of things done around the house and even in the yard (3 hours, one pile of branches and 7 bags of lawn refuse. And that is just the front yard, which is still not done. *groan*) (Oh and thank you February! I apologize for smiting your name.)

So while I could not write much this week, I really looked forward to Thursday and doing a silly post about handbags.

The Seatbelt Handbag, Made Entirely of Seatbelts

Again, thanks goes out to Jodi and her green little heart for providing this week's handbag. Al Gore would be proud.

*Who is this "they"? Why do "they" just not identify themselves, already. Damned cowards.

I find that it is vital to have at least one handbag for each of the ten types of social occasion:

Very Formal, Not So Formal, Just a Teensy Bit Formal, Informal But Not That Informal, Every Day, Every Other Day, Day Travel, Night Travel, Theater, and Fling. - Miss Piggy

A few weeks back, I asked Jodifur to do a Handbag Sunday that could bookend her lovely little Shoe Friday gig. She called me a lazy whore and told me to do it myself. Well, maybe she did not put it precisely in that way. I forget because I was drunk. Or something.

Actually, come to think of it I seem to remember her being very positively generous about the whole thing. Anyway..... without further ado, I present Handbag Thursday. Because I am nothing if not a brazen copycat.

I decided to use this purse as the inaugural Handbag Thursday. I bought it at a little boutique in Marblehead MA for about $40 in 2004. I still love this purse and when I am done with the whole toting of toys and tissues*, I hope little purses are back in style so I can use it again. It has been a great purse and very sturdy - this thing has traveled all over the country and has taken a beating, yet is still in great condition. I think it is a valuable lesson in that a nice, durable handbag does not have to be an inordinately expensive one. Although, not that there is anything necessarily wrong with an expensive handbag. Gulp.

____________________________________

And...........there you have it. Handbag Thursday! Not every post will be long like this one. Also, I am certainly open to posting snaps of your own handbags - just email me (cagey333ATgmailDOTcom) if you would like to be included.

I would like to extend a special thank-you to Jodi for giving me this idea and granting her gracious permission for the knock-off. It is obvious she is having much fun with her Shoe Friday, I suspect I will have as much fun with my own little accessorized day o' the week.

*Believe it or not, I do not carry a diaper bag and have not for well over a year now - I have a Fleurville Re-Run Micropod which usually hangs out in the car.

Who's counting?

Four years ago, I published my very first post on this wee blog. The most accurate way to re-cap the past four years?

It has been fun.

That's all. Although, to indulge my Inner Maudlin, I will say this: I had no idea that writing would become such a creative, cathartic outlet for me - I was merely jumping on a bandwagon that looked entertaining (hence, the subtitle "The Outdated Drivel of a Pop Culture Sheep".) I also love, love play on words and the oft-scorned writing technique of alliteration, which led to the blog title "Rancid Raves" (aka Rants and Raves.) A special thanks goes to Average Jane and Surrender, Dorothy. Your forays into the Blogosphere inspired me to begin my own and I am forever grateful that I began blogging.

To this day, my favorite posts are the ones celebrating my children's milestone birthdays (Arun's six month and one year posts. Then, just last month, Anjali's first year post.) I hope they appreciate my humor someday and end up with that important ability to laugh at themselves. For truly, if they cannot laugh at themselves, they cannot laugh at others. That is the Golden Rule, is it not?

To celebrate, I am taking a page from Caro's book and requesting that you leave me a gift. What is a favorite post of yours from your own site? I have been the recipient of some thoughtful Linky Love this past week, now it is your turn.

June 13, 2008

Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?

That always struck me as a bit odd.

Anyway - I usually refer to this site as my Happy Place. It is not normally a place to drown my sorrows, but rather a place for me to shine up the bright spots when they covered in muck. As such, I really hate to leave such sad posts up for the week and would like to end the week with an upbeat note. For sure, I am grateful for a lot of things in my life. Like, the fact that my financial circumstances allow me to pack up the kids and head to Vegas tomorrow, if need be.

While I would love to grouse about how infuriating it is that Fox News referred to Michelle Obama as a "baby mama", I am going to scoot straight on over to much lighter, fluffier fare.......Today, we are heading down to Baldwin for the Thomas the Train extravaganza. Arun is v. v. excited about riding the train and meeting Thomas. He also insisted that Ruby was going to be there, I guess Max can just suck it.

Earlier this week, BlogHer had a fun piece about the Last Handbag (basically, if money were no object, what would be your Last Handbag purchase? Ever.) It came at just the right time for me, distracting me from Larger Questions. I really enjoyed reading it and following all the links. Reading that piece, led me to other places about handbags:

Designer Handbags 101 - a one-stop shop for learning about handbags.
Megan's Minute, Handbag of the Month - a fun feature where Megan highlights various handbags she spots while out and about.
The Handbag Museum in the Netherlands - Great! Better get the kids their passports.

What would be your last handbag purchase? Honestly, I am so happy with my recent handbag purchase, I do not see myself buying a new one anytime soon. It has filled my every need perfectly. It is a purse, so I feel like a feminine woman and not a pack mule. But. It is big enough to carry the things I need. We went to the zoo last week and still, all I needed was the handbag, the lunchbox and the Fleurville micropod. I am set for awhile now, folks.

What's distracting you this week?

11 Months
This was the best picture I could get. She kept trying to crawl off of the chair. And so it begins. *sigh*

Early Mornin'
Anjali wakes up perky as hell. Arun? Not so much, as you can gather from this snap.

My Last Handbag?
Who am I kidding? Probably not.

Anjali's First Handbag
How could I resist this adorable fishbowl purse? Anyway, it's a landmark moment, Innernets. - my baby girl's first ever purse. Lord help me if my she likes handbags as much as I do.
