Our roof is shedding shingles and our dishwasher is spitting water, much to the chagrin of the hardwood floor surrounding it..... sigh.... Welcome to the world of No Paychecks For You, Entrepreneurial Suckers. I am most upset about the hardwood floor - I can live without a dishwasher and don't mind washing dishes by hand (Nay, I actually enjoy it), but the floor is bad. Seriously, Innernets - anytime you use the word "buckle" in reference to your flooring rather than your pants, it's B-A-D. Of course, this is happening while X is currently on a freeway heading towards Boston as he moves our car from DC/Virginia so of course, OF COURSE, he thinks I am freaking out for no good reason courtesy of Pregnancy Hormones. Hello Marriage Counseling! Nice to meet ya!
Oh well. At least the dead squirrel hasn't began to stink. It's the small things that keep me going.

Call your friendly insurance agent and file a claim for your floor. You might just get a new floor for a small fee! I'm speaking from experience. :-)
Goofy Girl,
We JUST filed a claim on our roof. Dammit.
It's almost enough to make one want to go back to renting. Stupid houses! (Don't let mine hear me sat that.)
Thank God for the squirrel!! He's definitely taking one for the team.
(okay, I'll stop trying to perk you up)
Houses are the darndest things. Ours has been refusing us admittance into our garage. Mike doesn't understand why I won't (can't) open the door manually. You mean the 18 foot long by 7 foot high door? The one that outweighs me? I don't think he remembers that he is a foot taller than me and outweighs me by a solid 60 pounds.
I have been given a portion of our tax return to use toward house related improvements and have been struggling to decide how to spend it. I'm hoping that nothing breaks before I make my decision... :)
And I am sure you know this, but am going to say it anyway. There are times when filing an insurance claim for damage to the house is a double-edged sword. I have heard of several people being denied coverage because of "too many" claims. The insurance company decides that you are an insurance risk because you file a claim for missing shingles after a wind storm, and then a tree falls over and damages your deck or something. Like I said, I'm sure you knew that already....
Erin,
Yes, I am VERY leery of the whole house insurance thing. Get this: just because we STARTED a claim, it already COUNTS, regardless if we had decided to move forward and accept the payout or just pay for it ourselves. Unlike with cars, there was no incentive for us to go ahead and pay for the damage ourselves. Furthermore, I've read that claims go with YOU from house to house - once they are entered into the CLUE system, they stay there.
That really sucks. What is it that old people always say - when it rains it pours. In this instance, it seems to be true.
So sorry for your troubles. We had to deal with a flooded utility room caused by a clogged sewer pipe last week. Soon, we will have to dig up the bushes whose roots caused the clogging. Being a homeowner is sooo much fun.
I absolutely detest washing dishes by hand. It is my least favorite chore... ranking even behind cleaning the bathroom (unless it's a really gross bathroom, but mine isn't). You may come over and wash my dishes anytime. :-)
I don't think I could live without my dishwasher. I'm such a lazy ass.
"I can live without a dishwasher and don't mind washing dishes by hand (Nay, I actually enjoy it)."
Mind boggling.
Yeah, a buckled floor is not a pretty sight. Hopefully, just the warped section can be replaced and the whole ($$$$) floor won't have to be replaced.
Murphy's Law. It sucks.
Um, okay. Not sure what to say to make you feel any better. Been there? Done that? I made back-to-back insurance claims and it didn't cause a problem. Think you could talk to your agent? I cannot believe that it counts even if you end up paying for it yourself. Yikes.
Call your insurance agent and ASK if filing an additional claim will:
- be denied
- raise your rates
- cause any other gooey badness
Our agent was pretty up-front with us. We also paid a "surcharge" of about $200 to replace our $30K hardwood floor. No brainer there, my friend.
You don't know if you don't ask... :-)
Often times a buckled floor can be sanded into submission if the warping isn't too bad. You should take a picture. Filling a claim could be onerous though as it can adversely affect your insurance against more significant issues.
The good news is that pregnancy hormones are probably responsible for most of the stress, and remember, if you don't fall through the floor, it's not a big deal. My wife refuses to entertain the thought of even having a dishwasher. I blame that on pregnancy hormones too, but she's always been a hippy like that.
Yeah I remember when Goofy had hers replaced! I was going to mention that... You never know it would be worth it that is why we have insurance right??
